Tips for Painting Wooden Furniture at Home



Do you have some pieces of wooden furniture at your house that you want to recolor? You can always call a home painting company to do the job for you. But, if you don't want to do that, you can still complete the task on your own. Carefully following the instructions below can help you achieve satisfying results.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin working on the project, prepare the following tools and materials:
·        Acrylic-latex paint
·        Primer coat
·        Paintbrush
·        Roller and tray
·        Masking tape
·        A large piece of cloth and rags
·        Sandpaper
You can also wear protective gear, like a pair of gloves, which can help if your skin is sensitive to the chemicals present in acrylic products. Using a face mask or respirator, meanwhile, can prevent you from inhaling dust or toxic substances.

Step 2: Put a Piece of Cloth on the Floor

Spread a piece of cloth on the floor or any other surface that you don't want to get messy. If you don't have a large sheet of fabric at home, you can use old broadsheets instead. Just put one layer on top of the other to make them thicker.

Step 3: Sand the Surface of the Furniture

Thoroughly rub coarse sandpaper, preferably #100 or #150 grit, on the furniture. The goal isn't to get rid of the previous coating on the wood. Rather, this process is done to even out the surface and make it easier for you to apply coats of primer and acrylic paint later.
If you're working on a large piece of furniture, it might be better to use an electronic sander. Doing it manually will tire your arms.

Step 4: Prime the Wood

Also called an undercoat, primer is made of resin, solvent, and additive agents. It's necessary to ensure the acrylic products will stick to the wooden surface. Also, it increases paint durability.
Use a roller to prime the wood twice. Wait for about 30 minutes to 1 hour for each coat to completely dry. You know the surface is no longer wet when it already has a chalky feel and white appearance.
After the second coat of primer dries, even out the surface again with fine sandpaper. Use #220 grit, if possible. Wipe the furniture with rags to get rid of dust particles.

Step 5: Apply 2 Coats of Paint

Apply a coat of your chosen acrylic product on wide surfaces with a roller. For corners, trims, and edges, use a narrow brush. Be gentle to avoid making mistakes, and make sure that your strokes are parallel to the grains of the wood.
Wait for 1 to 2 hours for the first coat to dry, then sand the surface again. Add another layer of paint afterward.
